Eustis Engineering performed both the geotechnical exploration and construction materials testing (CMT) in Gulfport, Mississippi, at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, where the complex was being expanded.
In addition to caring for sick or injured marine animals, IMMS focuses on public education, conservation, and research on marine mammals in the wild and under human care.
Three new structures were to be built at the site. The first building would house a reef tank and several smaller tanks. In the second building, several marine encounter pools were to be built, and the third building would house a birthday rental pool.
After drilling soil and auger borings and performing CPTs, Eustis Engineering then performed soil mechanics laboratory tests on soil samples. Our engineering analyses included recommendations regarding site preparation, estimates of allowable soil bearing values for shallow foundations, estimates of settlement, and the components and thicknesses for flexible and rigid pavements.
Additionally, Eustis Engineering technicians performed more than 500 hours of CMT work on this project, including in-place density tests, compressive strength tests on concrete, and special inspections of reinforced concrete and structural masonry.
