Kenner residents will vote 25 March to extend an existing 5.59 mill road tax that generates $2.8 million annually for the city. The purpose of the streets tax is to acquire, construct, improve, and maintain public streets. Early voting is 11 March to 18 March.
The road tax renewal allocates $1.9 million annually to repay a bond millage for repairs and improvements to Kenner roads, and about $800,000 of this goes toward the Public Works budget for street repairs. Additional money collected is available for citywide road projects.
Kenner property values have increased since the tax was created in 2003, so over the years the millage has been rolled back from 10 mills to 5.59 mills. A millage is equal to one-tenth of 1 cent and is how officials assess property tax.
The extension of the millage would be a continuation of what Kenner residents are already paying.
